An Enigmatic But Reliable Lead

Chapter 8: An Enigmatic But Reliable Lead

Logan's home was a sanctuary of technology and information. The evening light filtered through the windows, casting shadows over the room filled with computer screens and stacks of documents. Logan was in front of the printer, watching intently as a document slowly emerged. The machine's hum was the only sound until Max burst through the door.

"What have you got?" Max asked, her voice filled with urgency.

Logan snatched the documents off the printer, his eyes scanning the pages. "Reliable Media disappeared two and a half months ago. Six months ago, he lost his license due to unauthorized drug testing with illegal substances. No records, no entries, nothing since then. But, the same day Media fell off the earth, an amount matching the exact amount of his assets was mysteriously deposited in the account of a gentleman named Aidem Emaseht."

Max shoved her hands onto her hips, shaking her head in confusion. "And this is the part where I ask, what the hell does that have to do with the price of leather in cow country?"

Logan smiled a hint of triumph in his eyes. "Aidem Emaseht spelled backward reads, 'the same media.' Quaint, simple, easily overlooked."

He held out the sheet of paper. "Guess who's got his address?"

Max remained still, a suspicious yet pleased smile spreading across her face. She stepped forward and took the paper from Logan's hand. "As always, thank you."

She looked at Logan curiously. "Are you sure you're okay?"

Logan nodded, his expression serious. "I'm fine. Be careful. Even with your abilities, Sunkiss Park is a pretty dangerous place."

Max smiled sarcastically. "Hey, danger is in the genes, right?"

She turned on her heel, strutting towards the door. As she reached for the handle, Logan's voice stopped her.

"Umm, Max..."

She glanced back over her shoulder, her eyebrow raised in question.

"Thanks for responding to the pager so quickly," Logan said, his voice softer.

Max's expression softened, her eyes meeting his. "Hey, we're in this together, right?" Her voice was soft, almost fragile.

With a final nod, she walked out, ready to chase down the next lead in the ever-deepening mystery. The city was a jungle, but Max thrived in its shadows, always one step ahead, always looking for the next challenge.
