Belief in the Cause
Chapter 16: Belief In The Cause
Logan sat in his wheelchair, gazing intently at an old photograph of himself. In the image, he stood tall in the woods, with a fishing rod in hand and a radiant smile on his face. He brought the picture closer, tracing the contours of his legs, a bittersweet reminder of his former mobility.
Bling entered the room, breaking Logan's reverie. Startled, Logan quickly set the photo down on the table.
"Logan, I'm heading out. Do you need anything?" Bling inquired, concern etched in his voice.
Logan, still facing away, waved off the offer. "Nah. I'm good. Thanks."
Bling glanced at his watch, sensing something amiss. "You sure?"
Logan let out a weary sigh, his gaze drifting upward. "Sure, I'm sure. I've got everything I need -- right here between these four walls."
Bling's unease grew palpable. "You okay? You seemed kinda down lately. Problems with Max?"
Logan turned his wheelchair around, meeting Bling's gaze with a forced smile. "Max is off on another Manticore fact-finding mission, but she'll be okay."
Concern etched Bling's features as he probed further. "What about you? What's up?"
Logan hesitated, then opened up to his friend. "Bling, I'm fine. Go ahead and have some fun."
As Bling made to leave, Logan halted him with a sudden confession. "Hey, Bling?"
Bling paused in his tracks, turning back to face Logan, his expression softened with understanding.
"I'm struggling a little bit -- with not being as independent as I used to be. Sometimes I'm not sure why the people who're around me are around me," Logan admitted, his voice tinged with vulnerability.
Bling leaned back against the door, his gaze steady as he offered reassurance. "I'm here because I believe in what we're doing. Max, with all her charm and poise, is here not just because you help her but because underneath that smart-as-a-whip exterior, she cares about people. Logan, we're here to take the path with you."
Logan nodded, a sense of understanding dawning within him. With Bling's words echoing, he felt a renewed sense of purpose.
